To describe a fireplace we can say it is a place or covering for fire (more specific open fire) kept inside an enclosure or a dwelling. The major use of a fireplace is to keep the room warm but it is also used for open fire cooking. They were originally developed in the medieval time. That time people used these fireplaces in their homes and castles for the production of the heat. Even those fireplaces were well equipped with the chimneys for the proper disposal of the smoke generated in the process. The regular use of the fireplace showed the defects and opened the way for the innovation in the design of fireplace.
Several changes were made. The rectangular shape proved to be the best for the fireplace. The fire at certain depth was more effective than the one at the ground level. The grate was used as it provided better draft. Splayed sides were used for increasing the reflection of the heat generated by the burning of the fossil fuel. Bricks were used instead of stones which were used initially. Not only this, the idea of using bricks instead of stones proved to be very effective as the thick wall behind the fireplace helped in the absorption and re-transmission of the absorbed heat.
